We all know the effect a bad night’s sleep can have on you. You’re irritable. You have a hard time focusing and remembering. You might snap at the simplest requests. In short, you are not yourself. Ask any new parent – especially one currently negotiating the one-two combo of ‘Irish twins’ – what months or even years of sleep deprivation does and we’ll report back with everything from anxiety to depression to getting sick all the time. The truth is, scant sleep is a growing epidemic. While I found some comfort in knowing that I was not alone, I took to a well-worn piece of advice to help me break the cycle: the first step to solving a problem, is admitting you have a problem.
Today, within the relentless modern pursuit of peak performance – be it in the boardroom, the gym, and everywhere in between – sleep has emerged from the shadows as the ultimate, non-negotiable bio-hack. So, engaging my logic brain, if a lack of sleep is a problem, perhaps there was a way to engineer a way to consistently perfect slumber?
Enter Eight Sleep – the maker of smart mattresses that has developed sophisticated technology poised to turn your bed into a command centre for nocturnal rejuvenation.
In what seems like a minor subplot in an episode of Black Mirror, the Eight Sleep has been at the cutting edge of the sleep-improvement game for a while now, led by its revolutionary ‘Pod’ system. I opted for its best-selling ‘Pod 4’ option, which is essentially an A.I. powered piece of high-tech fabric that you stretch over your bed’s mattress, underneath the sheet.

The secret to its magic is housed in the desktop-PC looking device called the Pod, which needs to be located near your bedside. It is through this that water is pumped through the smart mattress cover in tiny tubes either warming or cooling your body throughout the night depending on what you need for that ultimate night’s sleep.
Making it even more clever is that through the customized App you can set the mattress to prepare the temperature of your bed for when you plan to get into it, and, though its myriad of sensors, it also constantly adjusts the temperature throughout the night to keep you asleep, before adjusting it again to help you wake up naturally. Think of it as your personal nighttime climate concierge – one that is more tuned into you than, well, you are.
For Eight Sleep, the thinking behind the tech is simple, over the course of a night, the condition of your body is not static. “Temperature should not be constant throughout the night,” CEO of Eight Sleep, Matteo Franceschetti, previously said of the device that can make adjustments “up to 3,200 times per night”. Driven by its ‘Autopilot’ AI, the system initially establishes your body’s base levels and then makes thousands of micro-adjustments throughout the night, responding to your sleep stages and ambient conditions, ensuring your body remains in its optimal thermal zone. And then comes the fun bit. Stats!
The Eight Sleep app is the central command centre – pinging around data tweaks like you are on the trading floor. Though its main dashboard it gives you a ‘sleep score’, with stats and charts reporting on how long you slept; how deep you slept; your heart rate variations; the amount of time it took you to drop off and wake up; the number of times the system tweaked the mattress’ temperature; and even how much of the night you spent snoring. Ultimately, all that combines to paint a picture (albeit one made of Matrix-style ones-and-zeros) of how well you slept.

Obviously, when playing with stats, the detail is key in the reporting – so sharing a bed with a partner is also taken into account via the brand’s Dual-zone control, which allows each side of the bed to be controlled separately. But note, it also opens up the daily comparison of ‘who slept better,’ should you want to open up that door.
There is no doubting that the Eight Sleep Pod 4 is positioned squarely in the luxury tech sphere and, like any new-gen wellness-leaning tech, the question undercutting it all is: what’s the level of optimisation worth to you?
As both the Eight Sleep Pod 4 – and its even more formidable sibling, the Pod 4 Ultra – are less about bedding and more about biotech, the step up is scalable, and comes with a serious financial commitment.
While the Pod 4 tracks 36 biometric and environmental sensors capture a wealth of intelligence as you sleep, the Pod 4 Ultra comes with an intelligent adjustable base, capable of subtly elevating the head to counter snoring (claiming up to a 45% reduction) or to find that perfect ergonomic sweet spot – but for a rather punchy initial drop of $6,500 (followed by the Autopilot subscription – around $25-$42 a month – essential for unlocking the Pod’s full smart functionality).
The payoff, according to those who’ve integrated it into their lives, is tangible. Esquire Australia reports users banking an average 10% more deep sleep, with some early adopters seeing that crucial recovery phase boosted by as much as 34%. Cardiovascular metrics like resting heart rate and HRV – key indicators of your body’s readiness to perform – also see notable improvements. One Esquire writer even chronicled a two- to threefold surge in deep sleep, alongside significantly enhanced HRV. For anyone battling the tyranny of night sweats or a partner who radiates heat like a furnace, the relief is profound.
So, has the Eight Sleep Pod 4 been the silver bullet for my sleep woes. Yes, sort of.
While it is fun to revel in the data and decode patterns in your body the morning after – which has been notably improved by the subtle tweaking of temperature during the night – the real change has been in mindset.
Committing to buying a smart mattress comes at a cost, but one that is increasingly justified if you take its benefits seriously. Your data-prepped sleep metrics can only inform you of how your body recovers during the night, but it is not a fix-all solution. If you believe that an optimised night translates directly to a day seized, then the Eight Sleep Pod 4 goes a long way to guide you to your physical and mental peak. The final call, as always, rests on how much you’re willing to invest in mastering your night.
