iPhone 17 is almost here: Release date, must-know details released

Apple has officially announced the date of its annual fall event, sending out invites for a September 9 keynote at the Steve Jobs Theater in its Cupertino headquarters. The tech giant is expected to unveil a host of new products, including a radically redesigned iPhone lineup, upgraded Apple Watches, refreshed iPads, and AI-powered features, all amid rising competition in the artificial intelligence space.

According to multiple media reports, the centerpiece of this year’s event will be the unveiling of the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made, potentially measuring under 6mm. This new model is anticipated to borrow branding cues from Apple’s iPad Air and MacBook Air lines, emphasising portability and sleekness.

The launch could mark a turning point for Apple design, as the company looks to differentiate its devices after years of incremental visual updates. As reported by Hindustan Times, the iPhone 17 Pro models may feature a significantly larger camera module that stretches across the back — a radical design shift that breaks from the familiar iPhone aesthetic of recent years.

“This could finally be the time that Apple brings about a major change,” the Hindustan Times noted, adding to speculation that the iPhone 17 series will be a significant departure from past generations.

There are also unconfirmed rumors of Apple returning to aluminum frames for some models, moving away from the titanium used in the iPhone 15 Pro series. Meanwhile, the telephoto camera is expected to receive upgrades aimed at competing with Android flagships.

    Vanilla iPhones get much-needed refresh

The base iPhone 17 model, often the most popular among consumers, may finally receive a long-requested feature: a 120Hz refresh rate display. This would bring the standard iPhone in line with Pro models and Android competitors, offering smoother visuals for everyday use.

Apple is also expected to showcase updates across its hardware portfolio. These include new entry-level and high-end Apple Watches, updated iPad Pros, and a faster version of the Vision Pro headset, according to recent reporting by Bloomberg News. The Vision Pro, Apple’s mixed reality headset, is set to see performance improvements as the company continues its push into spatial computing.

The event is being closely watched by industry insiders and investors alike, as Apple faces mounting pressure to assert itself in the fast-evolving world of artificial intelligence. In June, the company previewed a slew of AI features and a major software overhaul, including redesigned icons and a new “liquid glass” look for its operating system.

However, critics say Apple has been slow to embrace AI, falling behind rivals such as Samsung, Huawei, and Honor, which have already rolled out advanced AI features in their devices.

“Apple’s delay in embracing the AI market has left it trailing Big Tech stalwarts,” noted industry analysts, pointing to opportunities seized by competitors in Apple’s absence.

US manufacturing investments ramp up amid tariff concerns

Beyond product announcements, Apple is also navigating geopolitical and economic headwinds. Under pressure from the Trump administration, the company recently pledged to boost its investment in the United States to $600bn over the next four years. The move is intended to create more domestic jobs and reduce dependency on production hubs like China and India, regions currently affected by ongoing trade tensions and tariffs.

The September 9 event could mark a defining moment in Apple’s product strategy and market positioning, especially as it works to catch up in the AI race and reinvigorate its core iPhone business.

With bold redesigns, powerful new features, and a clear emphasis on AI, all eyes will be on Cupertino to see whether Apple can reclaim its edge, or continue to play catch-up in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
