Syria will introduce a new national currency starting January 1, 2026, Central Bank governor Abdulkader Husarieh said on Thursday, according to a report published by the state news agency WAM.

Husarieh said the move, outlined in Decree No 293 of 2025, marks a new phase for the country’s monetary and economic framework.

The Central Bank will oversee the timetable and locations for exchanging the existing currency, with the process designed to be orderly and smooth, he added.

Details of the exchange mechanism will be outlined at a dedicated press conference to ensure clarity and transparency, Husarieh said, describing the new currency as a symbol of Syria’s financial sovereignty and a step toward economic stability and development.

According to a Reuters report earlier this month, Husrieh said that Syria is preparing to launch a new currency in eight-note denominations and confirmed plans to remove two zeroes from them in a bid to restore confidence in the battered pound SYP=, which was quoted at 11,057 to the dollar on LSEG Workspace on Thursday, December 4.
