Château Louis XIV is one of the most famous luxury homes in the world. Located in Louveciennes, near Paris, France, this extraordinary private estate became widely known after it reportedly sold for €275 million, or about $300 million at the time, in 2015. The sale was described by major publications as the most expensive private home transaction in the world at that time.

But Château Louis XIV is not an old French royal palace. It is a modern residence designed to look like a grand 17th-century château. Its combination of historic French design, modern technology and extraordinary luxury makes it unlike almost any other private home.

    What Is Château Louis XIV?

Château Louis XIV is a large private estate in Louveciennes, Yvelines, west of Paris. It sits between Versailles and Marly-le-Roi on approximately 23 hectares (57 acres) of land.

The château was developed by French luxury property developer Emad Khashoggi through his company Cogemad. Construction began in 2008 and was completed around 2011. The project used traditional French decorative techniques while incorporating modern technology.

The property has about 7,000 square meters of built space, with roughly 5,000 square meters described as living space in published reports. Its design takes inspiration from the architecture and gardens associated with the era of Louis XIV, the French king known as the “Sun King.”

Why Is Château Louis XIV So Expensive?

The price is not based simply on the size of the house. The estate combines architecture, craftsmanship, landscaping, technology and privacy on an enormous scale.

The design was inspired by 17th-century French châteaux, while the interior includes modern entertainment and leisure facilities. Reports have described features such as a private cinema, wine cellar, swimming pools, aquarium, recreational areas and an underground nightclub.

The property also uses highly detailed decorative work. Marble, gilded details, painted ceilings, elaborate woodwork and other traditional elements help create the appearance of an old royal residence.

A Modern Château With a Historic Look

One of the most interesting things about Château Louis XIV is its age.

Although it looks like a centuries-old French palace, the building was completed in the 21st century. The developer deliberately created a residence that would reproduce the atmosphere of a historic French château while offering the comfort of a modern luxury home.

This approach gives the property a unique identity. From the outside, it appears connected to the world of Versailles and French royalty. Inside, it includes technology and facilities designed for contemporary luxury living.

The nearby Palace and Park of Versailles is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is strongly associated with Louis XIV’s reign and the development of French royal architecture and landscape design.

    What Is Inside the Mansion?

The interiors of Château Louis XIV are designed for both formal entertaining and private relaxation.

    Published descriptions mention:

    • Grand reception spaces
    • Two master suites
    • Custom-designed kitchens
    • Marble decoration
    • Hand-painted details
    • A private cinema
    • Wine cellar
    • Swimming pools
    • Recreational facilities
    • Underground nightclub
    • Large aquarium
    • Modern technological controls

One of the most unusual features is an underwater aquarium room built into the moat. Reports have described an underwater viewing area where people can sit surrounded by glass and observe marine life.

This feature demonstrates how the property goes beyond traditional luxury. It was designed to provide experiences that are difficult to find in an ordinary mansion.

The Gardens Are Part of the Luxury

The gardens are almost as important as the building itself.

The landscaping was inspired by the formal French garden tradition associated with André Le Nôtre, the famous landscape designer who worked on the gardens of Versailles.

Descriptions of the estate mention carefully arranged flower beds, marble statues, paths, fountains and a hedge maze. A particularly famous feature is a gold-leafed fountain.

The result is a landscape designed to make the entire property feel like a private royal estate.

    Who Owns Château Louis XIV?

The original 2015 sale was reported as being made to an unnamed Middle Eastern buyer for €275 million. Later reporting identified Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the ultimate owner, reportedly through a series of companies. The ownership has been widely reported, although the purchase was initially kept private.

In 2022, international media reported that Mohammed bin Salman stayed at the château during a visit to France.

Because the property is a private residence, it is not a normal tourist attraction and should not be confused with the public Palace of Versailles.

Why Château Louis XIV Remains Famous

Château Louis XIV became famous because it represents an unusual combination of old-world architecture and modern wealth.

It looks like a French royal palace but was created recently. It offers enormous private grounds, elaborate craftsmanship and highly unusual amenities. Its reported €275 million sale also placed it in the history books of luxury real estate.

The property shows how modern ultra-luxury homes are increasingly designed as complete private worlds rather than simply large houses.

    Final Thoughts

Château Louis XIV is more than an expensive mansion. It is an architectural statement inspired by one of the most recognizable periods in French history.

From its Versailles-inspired gardens and gold details to its private entertainment spaces and underwater aquarium, almost every part of the estate was designed to create a sense of extraordinary luxury.

Its €275 million sale in 2015 made it one of the defining luxury-property transactions of the decade. Even years later, Château Louis XIV continues to attract attention because it combines history-inspired design, modern technology and extreme privacy in one remarkable estate.
